About Us

Welcome to MaAfrika Tikkun’s online gifting site….

Our name is a representation of “MaAfrika”, the mothering, empowering African atmosphere, mixed with the word “Tikkun” which loosely translated means change or transformation. Together the values of compassion, caring and helping and the African values of community warmth and sharing encompass the vision of our NGO, which is to care for vulnerable children in townships in a compassionate manner that is sustainable over time.

South Africa is still in the midst of political, social and economical transformation. It has overcome many of the problems it faced as a new democracy in 1994. However, many challenges remain and together with our Chief Patron Nelson Mandela, MaAfrika Tikkun is playing a part in making a meaningful difference to the upliftment of disadvantaged and impoverished people in South Africa. The task for combating the toll of Aids in South Africa is urgent. South Africa is home to 5.7 million people who are HIV positive – that’s more than any other nation… almost 1 in 5 adults. The United Nations estimates that more than 900 people a day die in South Africa as a result of Aids.

More and more urban dwellers in the region are living in life-threatening slum conditions with poor housing, insufficient living area, limited access to clean water and adequate sanitation. In fact 45% of urban dwellers in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities.

Of major concern to MaAfrika Tikkun is the care of the children. Unemployment is high, and parental illness or death because of HIV/AIDS and other diseases have left children orphaned or vulnerable and often homeless.

This website has been developed as a means of supporting people around the world to contribute collectively to shack building or shack renovation and basic needs for impoverished families in our projects. The fundamental need of a roof overhead can be achieved for so many more people with your help. By donating on this site, you will be contributing to funds allocated for the purpose of providing a very basic home for those so desperately in need – and who have often been on a waiting list for a long, long time.
